I was surprised how much depth of field was impacted on this relatively flat subject by just changing the aperture (& camera changed shutter speed).
I was on my back directly under the light, aperture priority mode @ 6.3 which put the shutter @ 1/6. ISO 800, 35mm, matrix metering. I wish I could have opened the aperture more for a faster shutter speed. The version on ISO 1600 had too much noise.

Pictures from the Capitol Visit Field Trip

This is not my picture for our weekly assignment, but my 3 favorite pictures of the ones I took today. One is a portrait of our class photo model; one is of the seal in the rotunda; and one is the snare drummer from the music group playing at the end of our field trip.

I took this picture of my friend's cat inside a room lit by large windows and skylights in midafternoon. f/5.6, 1/25, 55m, Canon rebel 450D, ISO 100, awb white balance, spot meter.  I like that her face is in good focus. I think it needs a bit more light but couldn't get her to be still enough after this one to try different white balance.

I took this picture 10 minutes after the sun set. My original goal was to get sunset pictures and remembered what Barbra said about taking advantage of the light after the sun went down. It changed the whole look of the picture.

While out photographing, I noticed different situations where I would need to change my white balance settings. I liked the improved quality that I can see in my photos now that I know how to use my white balance to acheive the look I want in my photographs. I would change my angle photographing the fountains. I only took photos from this one angle.

This is a picture I took of my granddaughter at the library where she always has to make a stop to say hello.  I took several pictures trying to get the right lighting. That was before I understood about metering. There is a skylight just behind the other girl. Then Anne had on a white blouse. I used normal program setting (P),ISO 400, Shutter speed 1/15, Aperture 4.5, 34mm focal length, pattern metering. I would appreciate any suggestions about the camera settings in particular.

White balance: custom; I used a expodisc that I place over the lens to achieve the desired WB 

I also tried capturing the dancer using the manual mode and the full sun pre set WB but I liked the results of this setting more so. I wish I would have been able to get some different angles and I should have tried different metering modes. The photo I took of her on manual mode (not the same image) I changed it to a black and white image to better help me see the highlights and shadows. What I do like about this image is the dancer was totally engrossed in what she was doing and didn't pose, the photo was purely candid.

This photo was taken at Procession of Species Parade on Saturday April 18th. I liked all the colors in the parade and this character stuck out the most to me.



















This photo was taken at the Dragon Boat Races on Sunday April 19th. This guy really stuck out to me cause of the guitar on his back.













This photo was taken at Damon Park in Ocean shores on Monday April 20th. I loved the action of the waves coming in and hitting the posts and rocks.

Debby - Fountain Action

I then went over to the fountain to capture the action of the kids and water. These two were my favorites..

I loved the expression of this kid as the water hit him. Next time, I'd move around so that the background wasn't the cars.

I think this is my favorite of the day. This little boy had such fun. I got quite a few of him running around....but I love the kind of pensive look on his face. At this point, he hadn't quite gotten up enough courage to be running in and out of the water. He was carefully watching the big kids to see how they did it before he started. I also like the reflection in the water on the ground.

I was trying to especially capture action....my usual is landscapes or stills.


This one I like because of the various colors, the action of the water along the side of the boat, and the paddles/oars all positioned mid stroke. I feel like the focus isn't quite right though. It looks to me like the area most in focus is the dragon head on the one boat.

This one I like because of the closeness I was able to get of just the head. I'd like it better without the dock in the background.

This one I like for all the action that has been stopped and the reflection of the boaters in the water in the front boat.

The other day on the beach I saw sand dollars everywhere. So I photographed them morning, noon and night. When the late afternoon light fell I found the sand dollar, the light, and the shadows I was looking for. A friend commented that this was the common postcard shot. So next time I go to the beach I guess I will try to find a more unique shot. Between you and me though, I really like this one.

So... I didn't make it out to shoot with you all, which made me sad... I'm looking forward to next week.  I did manage to get out there in the late afternoon and lucky for me, there was still some races left.  I selected a faster shutter (1/400s) to freeze the action of the paddlers.  The camera chose f/8 at ISO 800.  I was using my 18-200 VR lens with a circular polarizer to cut the glare off the water.  White balance was "cloudy".  I was playing with others but liked that one the best.

Automatic Depth-of-Field

My comfort zone includes anything that walks, skips, hops, swims and/or flies. This exercise forced me (3/4 of the time) to shoot out of my zone. All images were shot with "Daylight" white balance, ISO 200 & either an ultraviolet or circular polarizer lens. All comments welcome.

After the field trip on Sunday I went into a restaurant to eat and these sparkly glasses caught my eye. Mid-way through my lunch I realized that my camera settings were still for the sunny lake and not the restaurant. I went back and tried the same glasses but adjusted, then played with, my white balance. The new photos had all the excitement of used dishwater. My original "mistake" delighted me. I tried to re-shoot it the next day but the bar was full (on a Monday at 1pm?!). If I was to do it again I would put more thought into the composition and know what I wanted with the sparkly object, not just chase blindly after it.
